Reasons to give up bottled water
According the the National Rescources Defense Council, about 40% of bottled water is from the public water supply, anyway . Why are you paying a premium for this when you could get it for much less (see item 3)?
Bottled water companies are capitalizing on your fear of the public water supply. We have some of the best water in the world; ninety percent of tap water in the U.S. meets or exceeds EPA standards for drinking water. If you don't like the taste or color, it is probably your pipes. A simple filtration device should do the trick.
The New York Times reports that getting your recommend daily amount of water from bottled water costs $1,400 annually compared to $0.49 (yes, 49 cents!) from the tap for the entire year.
1.5 million barrels of oil each year are used making the bottles that hold bottled water (NY Times).
It is not a good idea to reuse the plastic bottles; they are only meant for one time use. Reuse can lead to leaching of toxins into your water such as DEHA, a known carcinogen, and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), one likely hormone disrupter.
